As part of our interview series for the Shortlisted companies in the AXA PP HealthTech & You Breakout Award 2016 we are delighted to be speaking to Monisha Perkash of Lumo Lift. The Breakout Award is dedicated to the piece of health tech that has most embedded itself into the public’s lives over the past year. The winner will be decided by YOU.
Monisha Perkash – CEO Lumo Lift
SD – Hi, could you please introduce yourself?
My name is Monisha Perkash, I am the CEO and one of the three co-founders of Lumo Bodytech
SD – Where are you based?
Lumo Bodytech is based in Mountain View, CA – in the heart of silicon valley.
SD – What is your background?
I am a serial entrepreneur and passionate about health and fitness. I joined my Lumo co-founders with the desire to launch a business that would positively impact millions of lives. Prior to founding Lumo Bodytech, I served as CEO and Co-Founder of TuitionCoach (acquired by SimpleTuition in 2009), where I oversaw the financing, launch, and general management of the start-up. After the acquisition, I stayed on with SimpleTuition as VP Products. I have an MBA from Stanford and a BA from Yale.
SD – What has been the inspiration for Lumo Lift?
I am a life-long athlete and passionate about finding ways to live a healthy, active, and fulfilling life. I am also married to a spine & sports physician, through whom my co-founder Andrew Chang discovered posture classes as a solution for his back pain.
Andrew was in an accident at an early age, which caused spinal problems and put him in constant pain.
When we realized the significant impact posture had on back pain and how far reaching the benefits are, from reducing stress to building confidence, we knew that we were onto something that could change lives.
SD – How does Lumo Lift work?
The Lumo Lift, worn as a tiny magnetic clasp on your upper body, tracks your body positions, gently vibrates when you slouch, counts steps, calories, and mileage, and encourages small habit changes that add up to a big impact on your overall health.
SD – What are the user benefits?
The Lumo Lift alerts you when you slouch, to help you develop great posture habits and body awareness. Great posture helps reduce the risk of back pain, decrease stress, increase productivity, communicate credibility and makes you look more attractive. The Lumo Lift also track your activity.
SD – How does Lumo Lift differ from other companies in this space?
The Lift provides real-time feedback and is the first wearables technology to track posture.
SD – What do you see as your biggest challenges for Lumo Lift?
Educating people on the importance of posture and helping them to change established bad habits.
SD – What do you see the digital health landscape being in 2020?
In 2020, wearable technology and sensors will be integrated into apparel for a more seamless experience. The technology will be available when people want it, and disappear when they don’t. We will also have additional insights about ourselves, because technology, like the Lumo Lift, will measure previously unmeasurable metrics that help us to track and improve our behaviour and health.
SD – Why should people vote for Lumo Lift?
Great posture can benefit everyone – from young business professionals who want to communicate confidence to retirees who are concerned about developing a hunch later in life. Also, back pain is the second most common reason for visits to the doctors office and the #1 most common reason for missed work days. Both employees and companies can benefit from better back health.
